One Owner, 49 Years, 5K Miles, And A Mustang Mach 1 So Clean It Feels Unreal

by Brad Anderson Original owner bought it new for his 21st birthday in 1971. Powering the classic Ford is a 351 cubic-inch V8 with 285 hp. Odometer reads just 5,219 miles after 49 years of ownership. With only 5,219 miles on the odometer and nearly half a century in the hands of its original owner, this 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 stands out as a rare survivor. For those still searching for an unspoiled first-generation Mustang, this might be the one that stops the scroll. Read: Rare 1971 Boss 351 Mustang Found Stashed In A Barn For 46 Years+ The spectacularly preserved muscle car is currently listed for auction on Bring a Trailer, located in West Chester, Pennsylvania. According to the seller, it was purchased new as a 21st birthday gift, from the original owner to himself, and remained in his care until his passing in 2020. The selling dealer picked it up from the estate earlier this year, though the final sale price wasn’t disclosed. As new, the Mustang Mach 1 was optioned in White with black stripes along the sides, a black rear spoiler, the Ram Air hood, and tinted glass. It continues to sit on the original 15-inch Magnum 50 wheels. Given how little the car has been driven, it comes as no surprise that the exterior is absolutely immaculate. You could be excused for thinking it had recently been restored, but it is in fact all original. Step inside, and the interior keeps the period feel intact. Found inside the Mustang’s cabin are black bucket seats with knit vinyl inserts, silver stripes, and woodgrain accents. A heated rear window is included, along with an AM/FM stereo and a small, personalized plaque mounted near the shifter, showing the car’s original build date: August 16, 1971. Power comes courtesy of a 351 cubic-inch Cleveland V8 that produced 285 hp when this car was new. It’s coupled to a four-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels, which makes it al the more desirable in a sea of automatics. Ahead of the sale, the battery, fuel pump, and fuel hoses were replaced, and the carburetor was recently rebuilt. If the next owner wants to actually drive it, rather than just stare at it in a garage, it should be well up for the job. A look at the original sales paperwork reveals the Mach 1 cost $4,002.99 brand new. Adjusted for inflation, that lands just over $32,000 in today’s dollars. Bidding, however, has already blown past twice that amount, with a couple of days at the time of publishing. If you’re looking to get involved, the clock is ticking. For anyone drawn to low-mileage survivors and proper V8 muscle, this Mach 1 is a standout. You can check out the listing over here.
