Drivers urged to put toothpaste on car in December

Drivers are being urged to put toothpaste on their car in December for two important reasons that can both help fight common problems when the weather turns cold. The minty tooth cleaning solution can be used to help stop your car from fogging up with condensation in winter. Along with shaving foam and apparently onions, toothpaste has properties which prevent the formation of condensation on windows. The trick is to rub a fine layer of toothpaste across the inside of your windows and windscreen, watered down, and then it will prevent condensation or ice forming (where the condensation freezes in very cold conditions). Car insurance firm Marmalade explains: “We’re not just suggesting this as the minty freshness of toothpaste is a far more pleasant smell than that of raw onion, honest.  “They say that using toothpaste (watered down, otherwise you’re just adding another issue that’ll prevent you being able to see out of your windscreen in the morning) will prevent frosting windscreens.  “Or at the very least it should make them much easier to defrost with your car heating.” Shaving foam also works in a similar way, while onions, if cut in half and rubbed across the glass, can also prevent condensation from forming too, say the experts. But toothpaste also has another benefit - it can be used to clean your headlights too. Apparently, this can greatly increase your headlights’ visibility on the road especially at night. Which, in December, is a lot of the time, given how little daylight we enjoy at this time of year. Car windscreen experts Autoglass Ireland explain: “Here’s another unexpected use for something you likely already have at home – toothpaste.  “Apply a small amount of toothpaste to a soft cloth and rub it onto your headlights in circular motions. Once you rinse the toothpaste off, any existing haze should be removed and you should notice that your night-time visibility is greatly improved.”
